hey again. i've given up on win2k and sx and reinstalled win98. i had some problems getting the synth to work and since win98 had been lying around for a year or something and i'd done some hardware reconfiguration during that period i thought it might be best to just give the old 98 a fresh new start.

well, i'm still having the same problem. a while ago i kicked out the codec, so now both codec and midi 2 are disabled. the driver installation is fine, installed the "freshest" ones from good old terratec, i.e. synth driver 2.8 but now the synth driver fails to start and gets that exclamation mark we all love so dearly in the device manager. the errors tab gives the last error message: "Unknown error detected - Sorry!", the possible problems field sais: "Sorry, we hate this kind of messages, too. This error is unknown to the driver but if you just installed the new drivers, please restart your system." which is really helpful.

so, i don't really know what to do, any ideas? my hw setup is:

    abit kt7raid, duron 700Mhz
    voodoo 3 3000
    wintv pci go!
    realtek 10mbit ethernet
    and grandma ews64xl

should i try EWS64NEU.EXE, should i kick out the tv card or should i just start sending anthrax letters to terratec?

    help appreciated.

    Hello,

the reason for your problem with the synth driver is very often the EEPROM setting for the Control Port.
Start the program ews64cfg.exe and try another value for the Control Port, for example 328.
In most cases you should prefer fixed settings for the EWS64 and avoid any PNP-Settings.

Perhaps this will solve your problem...
    Kind Regards

    Werner

It probably is the EEPROM. I had that problem a while ago. Almost every time there are major hardware changes or change in OS it seems like the EEPROM needs to be reproramed.

I've made a mistake in my last reply:

The problem is the EEPROM-setting of the 'Digital Control' (NOT the 'Control Port'), sorry!

You should change the setting of the 'Digital Control' in your EEPROM-settings.
In most cases cases you will be successful doing that.

    Regards
    Werner
